Topics
Cell-Site Location Data (Phone Location Records)Search & Seizure (Fourth Amendment)

What did the court decide?

The full Eleventh Circuit held that obtaining historical cell-site records from a phone company with a court order under the Stored Communications Act, rather than a warrant, did not violate the Fourth Amendment.

Why does it matter?

This shows how federal courts treated cell-site records before 2018. The U.S. Supreme Court took a different view in Carpenter v. United States, which generally requires a warrant.
